Practical planning guide

Planning a concrete wall opening

Plan a wall-opening enquiry around the finished width and height, wall thickness, retained structure and removal of the cut section. Current design information defines the proposed alteration.

Define the wall opening and retained structure

Send a current drawing with width, height and location. Explain what the opening is for and distinguish the boundary to be removed from surrounding concrete. Identify the project designer or engineer responsible for unresolved structural questions.

Show access to both work faces

Show the cutting face, the working area and the route used to reach it. Include floor levels and available access to the other side where relevant. Mark nearby services and share any investigation already held by the project team.

Allocate support, lifting and section removal

Clarify who arranges support, lifting and removal of the cut material. State whether the cutting enquiry includes those tasks or only the separation cuts. Handling requirements should inform the overall package rather than being assumed after the cut layout is agreed.

Agree the opening handover

Identify what the following trade needs and which party makes good the area. Tell the office about the work window, occupied spaces and site coordination. Final method and attendance depend on scope review and confirmed availability.

Your enquiry checklist

  • Current opening drawing and dimensions
  • Retained structure and services information
  • Access to the work faces
  • Support, lifting, removal and handover responsibilities

Send what you know and identify details still being confirmed. These guides help describe a project; the agreed site-specific scope determines the work.

Concrete wall openings FAQs

These answers help you prepare an enquiry. For requirements specific to your site, talk to the office.

Discuss your project
What dimensions are needed for a wall opening?

Provide the finished width and height, wall thickness where known and the opening location on a current drawing. Explain whether the opening reaches an existing edge or is fully within the wall.

Why does a wall-cutting enquiry need a removal plan?

The separated concrete needs support and a route out. Share the proposed handling arrangements and identify who coordinates support, lifting and removal so the cut layout and work sequence can be reviewed together.

Can photographs replace the structural drawing for an opening?

Photographs show access, finishes and the visible work area, but they do not establish structural suitability. Provide the available project design and identify unresolved questions for its responsible designer or engineer.
